What are essential oils?
Essential oils, in a nutshell, are the concentrated extracts of plants, herbs, and trees that have been steam distilled or cold pressed. The concentration of essential oils makes them more potent than the plant itself. Essential oils can be used for aromatherapy, topically, and when used correctly ingested.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a holistic healing method that uses essential oils as a way to promote health and well-being. It works through your sense of smell and the absorption of the oils into your skin. The most common way essential oils are used for aromatherapy is with an essential oil diffuser. These devices allow you to mix a few drops essential oils with water to diffuse into the air as…well…aromatic steam.
Topical
Essential oils can be mixed with oils, lotion, bath salts, etc, or some oils can be added directly to your skin. Using essential oils topically can be simply used for aromatherapy (absorption of oils into your skin), or can be used as a healing modality (heal burn, scrap, cleanser, moisturizer, etc.).
Ingestion
Essential oils can be mixed with food or beverages (specifically Young Livings Vitality Oils). This could be to simply add flavor to your meal or drink, or as a way to support your immune system.

Essential oils can benefit your yoga practice in many different ways. They can freshen your space, clean your mat, and even ease sore muscles. Below are a few recipe examples for how you can use essential oils to benefit your yoga practice.
Meditation
Say Om is a great is a great blend to diffuse during a meditation. Lavender is a great scent to help your mind and body relax to help you find calm. Sandalwood is a great grounding scent to help you find a sense of peace. Eucalyptus with its invigorating aroma that helps to cleans the space and your body and also helps to bring about peace.
Clean
Whats better than a clean, fresh mat? After each yoga practice its a good idea to give your mat a nice refresher. In a spray bottle mix water, witch hazel, and Orange to help clean and refresh your mat! Orange not only gives a refreshing uplifting scent, but also deodorizes, and helps remove built up residue from sweat and oils from your body.
Practice
Focused Flow is perfect to diffuse during your physical yoga practice to help you get out of your head and on to your mat. Cedarwood helps you to find grounding and calm, getting your head out of the clouds on to to your mat. Bergamot and Geranium help to cleans the space and uplift your spirit to keep you moving and motivated.

Essential oils can stimulate emotions which can be useful in the energy healing process. They can be calming, uplifting, grounding, and allow the body to relax and unwind to relieve tension. Tension can prevent the body from being able to heal properly. Here are a few of my favorite blends for healing.
Heart Opening
Life can get a little crazy at times and sometimes its hard to think positively. A mix of Ylang Ylang, Rose, Lemon, and German Chamomile can help to stimulate a sense of love, relaxation, and uplifting happiness.
